Justin's Bio

Justin Label has thirteen years' experience in venture capital and private equity, and has led investments in, sourced and/or managed six successful private investments with a combined exit value of over $1.4 billion.  Most recently he was a Partner at Bessemer Venture Partners, where he worked for ten years.  Justin launched the Clean Technology practice at Bessemer in 2006, focusing on energy efficiency and other capital-light business models in energy innovation.  His investments spanned Smart Grid, Energy Storage, Efficient Lighting, Clean Transportation, and Solar Power.  Justin co-led the Series A investment in CPower, a leading Demand Response service provider, which saw 6x revenue growth over three years and had a successful exit with an acquisition by Constellation Energy.

Prior to leading Bessemer's Cleantech efforts, Justin was a Vice President at Bessemer focused on Internet, Consumer and IT Infrastructure investments.  Over five years in this role, Justin sourced several successful investments, including Postini (acq. by Google), Cyota (acq. by RSA/EMC), Netli (acq. by Akamai), Trigo (acq. by IBM), and Delivery Agent.  Justin also served as Bessemer's representative on the board of Tripwire until its successful acquisition by Thoma Bravo in May 2011.

Before joining Bessemer, Justin was an Associate at Valent Group, an early-stage VC firm.  He began his career at the Boston Consulting Group in San Francisco, where he advised utilities, telecom providers and consumer companies on diverse business strategies.  He holds an A.B. from Harvard University in Applied Mathematics.

Through his venture capital and private equity career, Justin has seen great passion in entrepreneurs, leaders who turn concepts into products into companies into great investments, numerous near-misses, great ideas fail to gain traction, hustle and determination trump mediocre initial ideas, small companies revolutionize century-old industries, and staggering wealth creation. Through Bessemer, he made modest personal investments in Skype, Yelp and LinkedIn (where he welcomes connections at his profile), and he's grateful to the entrepreneurs, teams and investors who repaid those investments many times over.  His experiences make him believe in the entrepreneurial and the venture capital processes as routes to wealth creation, professional satisfaction and even societal change.  He is passionate about participating in that ecosystem, and is excited to contribute in any way he can to great entrepreneurs and investors.

Justin lives in Baltimore, MD with his wife and two young sons.
